One of the most common misconceptions that surrounds dentures is that they are impervious to damage and staining. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Dentures can certainly be damaged, and false teeth can be stained by most of the same compounds that would have stained your natural teeth. It’s a little harder to stain porcelain false teeth compared to acrylic, but the danger is still there.
Luckily, you can follow these tips to prevent denture stains.
Avoid the Usual Suspects
Again, most of the same staining compounds that discolour natural teeth also affect false teeth, which means you should cut down on red wine, black coffee, and so on. You don’t have to cut them out entirely, but you should try to reduce your intake, and it helps to wash your mouth out with water after consuming them. If you smoke, try to quit. Cigarette smoke stains false teeth, and smoking can damage your mouth.
Brush and Floss Regularly
If you thought having false teeth would mean the end of your brushing and flossing days, think again. It’s important to clean them to remove bacteria and food debris, and a good oral healthcare regime will also help prevent stains. You see, the compounds in food, drink, and cigarette smoke can’t infiltrate the surface of false teeth, but they can build up and then harden on the surface. Brushing and flossing helps remove those compounds.
Use Alkaline Hypochlorite
You should be soaking your dentures overnight to ensure bacteria never gains a foothold. If you want to avoid stains, it’s a good idea to soak your dentures in an alkaline hypochlorite solution. Alkaline hypochlorite breaks the bonds of coloured molecules, turning them colourless instead. Buy over-the-counter and look for washes made with denture users in mind; several agents can make the surface of your false teeth more porous.
Have Them Professionally Cleaned
Finally, keep in mind that your dentist is still your best friend. They will be able to use an ultrasonic cleaner that uses soundwaves to rid your dentures of accumulated deposits and staining compounds.
